Many commercial truckers might have sleep apnea

The Department of Transportation requires truck drivers to pass a medical examination to hold a commercial driver's license. The specifics of the medical exam are left, in part, to the discretion of the examining doctor, and many choose not to check for sleep apnea, which can be a particularly dangerous condition for truck drivers on Ohio roads. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, between 17% and 28% of commercial drivers are thought to have at least mild sleep apnea.

Why the trucking industry might need better safety training

Truck fleet owners in Ohio and across the U.S. are re-thinking the way they train their drivers and enforce inspection rules in the wake of a 28-car crash caused by a long-haul trucker in Lakewood, Colorado. The catalyst for this fatal incident, which occurred back in April 2019, was a sudden failure of the brakes as the trucker was traveling downhill. Investigators found that the trucker had been cited for numerous brake-related violations in the past two years.

Trucking lobby vies for loosening of hour restrictions

Ohio motorists should be aware of the possibility of tractor-trailer accidents when traveling on local highways. That's because statistics from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration show that the number of deadly truck crashes has increased in recent years. In fact, there was a 10% increase in the number of fatal large truck crashes between 2016 and 2017.

Five common causes of tractor-trailer accidents

While most large truck accidents in Ohio are caused by the negligence of passenger vehicle drivers, not of truckers, there are still instances when truckers commit an error and cause a crash. Truckers may, for example, drive while drowsy, drunk, drugged or distracted by their phone. Driver error is just one of five common causes of large truck crashes.
