CVSA sidelines nearly 5,000 trucks during 2018 Brake Safety Week

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance has released the results of its 2018 Brake Safety Week, which took place from Sept. 16 to 22. Some truckers in Ohio may remember it because they were pulled over for random inspections as were truckers across the rest of the U.S. and in Canada. In all, 35,080 commercial vehicles underwent inspections to ensure compliance with brake safety guidelines.

Of those, 4,955 were placed out of service for brakes violations. This amounts to 14.1 percent of the inspected vehicles. The CVSA's 2017 Brake Safety Day saw a similar percentage of 14 percent although the total number of vehicles inspected over that day was fewer.

Inspectors focused on air-braked power units, trailers and hydraulic-braked trucks that require antilock braking systems. Out of 26,143 vehicles with air-braked power units, 8.3 percent were found with ABS violations as were 12.5 percent of trailers and 4.4 percent of hydraulic-braked trucks.

Brakes violations continue to be a widespread issue. In June, the CVSA held its annual 72-hour International Roadcheck. Brake violations made up the majority of out-of-service violations during that inspection spree, a total of 28.4 percent.

If truckers do not have ABS on a vehicle that requires it, or if they fail to maintain it, then they could be to blame when their negligence contributes to a truck accident. Victims of such accidents, especially those in passenger vehicles, typically suffer catastrophic injuries that require long-term medical care.

To receive compensation for their losses, victims might file a personal injury claim. Accident attorneys may have networks of professionals to investigate crashes, gather proof of negligence and show how reported injuries are accident-related. Attorneys may be able to negotiate for settlements and, if necessary, speak on victims' behalf in court.
