The injuries most frequently caused by truck accidents

Many Ohio motorists see commercial trucks on the road every day. Unfortunately, 97 percent of fatalities in crashes between large trucks and passenger vehicles are from occupants in the latter. Below are just some of the most common injuries that survivors may be left to cope with.

Among the most severe are injuries to the spinal cord. Trauma to the spine may lead to the dislodging, compression or fracturing of vertebrae as well as serious nerve damage. The latter could induce temporary or permanent paralysis. Broken bones, such as fractured arm, leg and hip bones, can be caused by impact against the window, steering wheel or airbag. Shattered bones may require multiple surgeries for recovery.

Truck accidents can also leave victims with traumatic brain injuries. These exhibit a wide range of symptoms that are often subject to medical misdiagnoses. In fact, the symptoms themselves could appear days or weeks after a crash.

Among psychological conditions, survivors are most likely to develop post-traumatic stress disorder. The National Centers for PTSD notes that up to 9 percent of all auto accident survivors deal with this condition. Symptoms include nightmares, flashbacks and recurring anxiety attacks.

After a truck accident, victims can consult with a lawyer about filing a claim. If successful, they may be covered for short- and long-term medical expenses, lost wages and even emotional trauma. However, they may need proof of how the truck driver was negligent. A lawyer could use a network of professionals to assist in gathering the necessary evidence.
