Coalition to work to stop traffic fatalities

The Road to Zero Coalition, an organization that was formed in part by the National Safety Council, aims to lower the number of traffic-related road deaths by 2050. The coalition, which has 675 members, published a report in April 2018 that provided an outline for how the United States can lower the occurrences of traffic fatalities to zero. According to the CEO of the NSC, in order to completely eliminate traffic deaths, new technology, a dedication of resources and leadership will have to be a part of the solution.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administrations states that there has been an increase in the number of fatalities related to motor vehicle accidents. This is after many years during which the number was declining. In 2016, the number jumped to 37,461, a 5.6 percent increase.

The rise in deaths and injuries is not only attributable to passenger vehicles. The NHTSA reports that in 2016, the number of people who died in accidents related to large trucks totaled 4,317, 722 of whom were either the drivers of the truck or occupants in the cab. The statistic represents a 5.4 percent jump from the number of deaths in 2015.

The CEO of the NSC states that even though the overall concern of traffic deaths is the focus of the Road to Zero, there are three primary initiatives supported by the coalition that apply both to trucks and cars. One of these initiatives is targeting actions that have proven to be effective. The coalition also supports speeding up the implementation of safety technology in vehicles and road technology.

A personal injury attorney may file lawsuits against all negligent parties responsible for truck accidents that resulted in injuries to a client. The attorney may pursue financial damages against truck drivers for driving while impaired or drowsy.
